faqs about our products and the ordering/delivery process
What kind of wood do you sell?
What's the difference between tamarack and western larch?
A: Short answer: Nothing--sort of. Long answer: Western larch is found in this area of the northwest, and can grow to 180 feet tall, while tamarack is a smaller tree, seldom exceeding 70 feet, more often found east of here. Same genus, different species. In the northwest, though, when you say tamarack, you're probably referring to western larch. Tom-ay-toe, tom-ah-toe. Here's an interesting link on the difference, and why it exists.
Do you have hardwood? I'm used to burning oak, madrone, etc.
A: No, unfortunately, hardwood species like that are not native here. Birch and tamarack will be as close as possible to a hardwood, although they're nothing like oak. We do occasionally obtain limited quantities of fruit woods or maple, so we can add you to a wait list for those varieties if and when they are available.
When do you deliver?
A: We deliver Monday through Thursdays, year-round, except major holidays, although we definitely recommend putting your firewood away during the dry months, for best results. Firewood isn't nearly as fun to deal with in the rain or snow.
Is the wood all split?
A: Yes. Our firewood is all cut to your desired length (options range between 14" and 20", with 16" being fairly standard). It is always conveniently split to a user-friendly size. We do offer smaller and/or larger diameter split sizes if needed. Just let us know, and we'll be happy to accommodate your needs.
Can I just order my delivered firewood in rounds at a discount?
A: We don't offer rounds delivered at a discount at this time, however, we do have an option for you to come and pick them up, as well as loads of short mixed logs in bulk. Please call 208-773-2202 for more information about these options.
Do you sell logging truck loads of firewood? I like to split my own wood.
A. While we no longer sell logging truck loads, we do have a shorter log option that can be delivered. These are generally four to eight foot long logs, which can be delivered for you to split up yourself. They are sold by the load on one of our dump trucks. Call for pricing and delivery options.
How big is a cord of wood?
A: A cord is the standard measurement for firewood. A stacked cord will measure 4 feet high x 4 feet wide x 8 feet long. Total volume of this area is 128 cubic feet. Please note that this does not mean that you will have 128 cubic feet of wood molecules in that space. Standard forestry measurements will always remind you that the exact amount of solid wood in a cord will vary based on the size of each piece and/or the length of the cut pieces, as well as the manner of stacking, and that most cords of firewood will only contain about 85 cubic feet of solid wood, once stacked. The remaining volume is taken up by air space between the pieces of wood.
How many cords should I order?
A: We get asked this a lot, and the answer is...hard to say. This will depend on how large a space you're heating, whether it's for primary heat or aesthetic, your particular stove, and more. A random rule of thumb, if you're new to firewood, is this: If you're using it for your primary heat source, plan for one cord a month through the cold months. We deliver year round, so you can order more if you run out, but see above, regarding best times to put away wood.
How much can you deliver, and how is it delivered?
A: Deliveries have a one-cord minimum, and our trucks can carry up to 3 cords at once, for larger orders. It is delivered via dump truck, and we will always dump as close as possible to your desired woodshed or storage area. Bear in mind, sometimes that distance may be altered by terrain, obstacles, and/or weather conditions. If you're not sure about accessibility, have a Plan B location.
Do you offer stacking?
A: Unfortunately, no, we do not currently offer stacking.
Do I need to be home for the delivery?
A: Not at all. If it's not convenient for you to be home to receive delivery, let us know, and with a well-marked dump spot and a credit card on file, your wood will be there waiting for you when you get home.
Will I get a call before you deliver?
A: Yes. We always call or email to confirm and remind you the evening before delivery, as well as the driver will call when on the way, on the delivery day. Please note, if we are unable to reach you to confirm delivery the day before, (unless you have made prior arrangements in the event you aren't reachable) unfortunately the delivery will need to be rescheduled.
What if I don't need a whole cord / What if I want to come pick up my wood?
A: If you need less than one cord, we offer a self pick-up option if convenient, for minimum orders of 1/2 cord. Self pick-up orders can be scheduled usually with a few days of order, and can be picked up on weekdays before 4 p.m. They need to be prepaid via credit card or cryptocurrency by 5:30 p.m. the evening before the scheduled pick-up. If not prepaid, they will be rescheduled to a later date. There is not a discount for self pick-ups.
How do I pay? What payment methods do you accept?
A: Payment for deliveries is due at delivery and can be paid by any major credit/debit cards, cash or Bitcoin. Self pick-up orders are payable by any credit card or Bitcoin, and are due by 5:30 p.m. the day prior to pickup. We do not offer online payment at this time, so all credit card payments need to be called in at delivery. For Bitcoin payments, we will provide you with a crypto wallet address to send to. We do not accept checks, sorry.
Where do you deliver? Are there delivery fees?
A: Delivery is free to most areas in Kootenai County, however, delivery fees do apply to areas including but not limited to: east Hayden Lake, Blanchard, Bayview, Spirit Lake Cutoff Rd, Mica, Kidd Island, Worley, all Coeur d'Alene lake bays, Wolf Lodge, and Harrison. When you order, let us know where you're located, and we can get you a delivery quote, if applicable.
NOTE that Harrison, Wolf Lodge, Worley, and all Coeur d'Alene lake bay deliveries are limited to spring through August. We do not deliver to these areas from September until after spring breakup, due to widely variable road conditions, load limits, and time constraints.
Do you deliver to Washington?
A: No, unfortunately we do not, however, you are always welcome to schedule a self pick-up as described above.
What are your prices?
A: All prices are current on our Products page, however, prices and delivery fees are subject to change throughout the year without notice, regardless of when orders are placed. Meaning: An order placed in March, for November (or for next year), will be invoiced at the price that is current on the delivery date, rather than the price on the order date.
Who should I call if I need my stove and/or chimney serviced?
A: We recommend Black's Chimney and Fireplace Services in Hayden at 208-772-2234. If you've purchased a new stove, the dealer will have further info for you about your particular model.
When should I order?
A: Our delivery schedule fills up months in advance every year, so it's always best to order early. Really early...For example, many of our customers will order next season's firewood upon receiving their delivery of this season's order.
What happens if I call or order online, but the schedule is already full? How does the wait list work?
A: Once our delivery schedule is full, we will start a wait list. Anyone on the wait list will be worked onto our schedule as and when delivery dates come available due to any schedule changes that occur throughout the season. This will be on a first-come/first-served basis. Please note: Being added to the wait list does not guarantee that a delivery will be or has been scheduled, unfortunately, but we do our very best to accommodate everyone as opportunities arise.
Q: Do you have any retail stove or chimney sweep business recommendations?
A: We do recommend Kuma locally here, Black's Chimney service, and Flameinnovation.com builds a tiny wood stove perfect for tiny homes and RVs.
Thanks for visiting! We appreciate you all, and we look forward to seeing you this season.
